['nɔːθ 'west], Wirtschaftsplanungsregion in Nordwestengland, 7 342 km2, 6,41 Mio. Einwohner; umfasst die Counties Cheshire, Lancashire und die beiden Metropolitan Counties Greater Manchester und Merseyside mit Liverpool. Überwiegend ein leicht gewelltes Tiefland mit leistungsfähiger, zum Teil hoch spezialisierter Landwirtschaft (Milchviehhaltung, Rindermast, Ackerwirtschaft mit Sonderkulturen). Zwei Drittel der Bevölkerung leben im stark industrialisierten Ballungsraum zwischen Liverpool und Manchester. In der ehemals stark von der Textilindustrie (Baumwolle) geprägten Region vollzieht sich seit Jahrzehnten ein tief greifender Wandel; allein 1979-90 verlor die Region 368 000 industrielle Arbeitsplätze, konnte jedoch nur 119 000 Dienstleistungsplätze dazugewinnen, der höchste Verlust aller Regionen in diesem Zeitraum. Mit einem Beschäftigtenanteil von (1997) 21,3 % (505 000) hat die Industrie ihre einst dominierende Stellung zugunsten des Dienstleistungssektors (74,5 %) verloren. Als Entlastungs- und Entwicklungszentren wurden in den 60er- und 70er-Jahren die Neuen Städte (New Towns) Runcorn, Skelmersdale und Warrington geschaffen.
